Black Male Educators for Social Justice

Crafting a call for educators of color.

How many Black male teachers did you have? For far too many the answer is none.

The Fellowship: Black Male Educators for Social Justice aimed to recruit and retain Black male teachers in Philadelphia and beyond. By leaning into culture, creating spaces for intergenerational learning, calling out inequities, and building a community with love at its core, their work was electrifying to those in and outside of the classroom. And as the daughter of a teacher, will always hold a special place in my heart.

Their mission continues as the Center for Black Educator Development.

Teaching is revolutionary.

Honoring education as an act of social justice not only taps the legacy of the Black teaching tradition, its framing reminds the next generation to lead classrooms with a mission in mind.

A voice for change

This campaign called for educators across the country to attend the nation's first Black Male Educators Convening. Our efforts successfully doubled the event's expected attendees to 704 Black male educators.

Stay Woke wasn’t just the soundtrack of 2017, for the Fellowship, it was a rallying cry that raised critical questions about what it meant to be a woke educator.
